today was quiet.
physics homework with saracheney. mum bitching about my sleeping habits over the phone. copious introspection.
i know i may not have been so welcome at invites last night, but i'm a little offended that i wasn't ever told they were happening. (just a little. this too shall pass, blah blah blah aphorisms.)
i am redefining friendship for myself. starting over, as it were, with pretty much what i had at the beginning of last year. i've realized that the difference between methen and menow is that now i genuinely care what people think about me, and then i genuinely didn't as long as they treated me well. i will go back to there, i think. i like my friends but they are people to talk to, not people to recreate my life around. ignore all backhanded comments, live within self. be chill. be the loud kid who acts like a quiet one.
i really miss my seniors, i really miss having a smaller group of people who just outright refuse to do drama. last year had its intense moments (some tuesday night in january, watts balcony. one saturday evening in late september. any fourthwest invites. a night in ground watts during miniterm. afternoon of may eleventh at nc state. et cetera.) but not the kind of intensity that just tires after a while. i appreciated all of those moments, then. this year has been fun but i would like to change how i interact a little.
a new start, of sorts. digitaldelays.

We had a wonderful formal dinner in the PFM. Pictures to come (I can't truly explain this to non-NCSSM people without showing it to you.) There was also spontaneous "we picked a new chiba"-ing with the juniors, and I love them dearly.
I got ALL of my music tagged and organized and onto my (new!) ipod. I'm going to be doing the 'downloading an album a day' bit on bittorrent, plus whatever else I can get ahold of, for this long extended coming up. Yum.

Courses and Other Educational Activities - 106.34 and 106.35
ourses or other educational activities may not be provided separately on the basis of sex. An institution may not require or refuse participation in any course by any of its students on that basis. This includes physical education, industrial, business, vocational, technical, home economics, music and adult education courses.
Sex education is an exception: portions of elementary and secondary school classes dealing with human sexuality may be (but do not have to be) separated by sex.
Title IX prohibits sex segregation in physical education classes except for the following:
* Students may be separated by sex within coeducational clsses when participating in wrestling, boxing, rugby, ice hockey, football, basketball and other sports, the purpose or major activity of which involves bodily contact. * Students may be grouped according to ability for instruction if the assessment is made using objective standards of individual performance which are applied without regard to sex and which do not have an adverse effect on members of one sex. * If students' religious beliefs prohibit them from participating in coeducational physical education, they may be excused from such classes or offered sex-segregated physical education.
Choruses may be based on vocal range or quality and may result in single-sex or predominantly single-sex choruses.
Local school districts may not, on the basis of sex, exclude any person from:
* any institution of vocational education; or * any other school or educational unit, unless the school district offers that person courses, services and facilities which are comparable to those offered in such schools, following the same policies and admission criteria.

Speaking as the head workservice student for the new comp sci department, this is the most absurd, ridiculous, sickening thing I've heard in a long time.
First, this is segregation. It may be voluntary segregation in one direction (at least, I'm assuming that girls are still welcome in the 'guys' class'), but I oppose this on the exact same grounds that I oppose 'historically white' colleges. NCSSM is a school, and it is not its place to separate people for classes on any basis other than academic experience and merit. This should be more than enough to convince anyone that this class is a BAD IDEA. But:
What we are doing here is giving otherwise smart, motivated girls permission to say "I'm too scared. I'm too intimidated. I want to take this class, but I'm too afraid to actually take it." Where we should be encouraging them to take on computer science as a challenge, what NCSSM is doing is giving them permission to 'chicken out' and refuse to compete against the people who, whether we like it or not, are often the strongest people in the field. Computer scientists are not easily intimidated people. Computer scientists tend to be the people who would see a class full of the opposite gender as an interesting challenge.
Also. The class block of one teacher's time spent on this class would be far better spent elsewhere. Our comp sci department is growing but is still far from being an NCSSM institution. What we need to do is offer more, more advanced, more specific classes; different programming languages; different aspects of computer science. We are one block further away from doing this by adding a girls-only class.
Finally: let me leave you with a few scenarios. English majors are far more often female than male. School A decides that, since they have more females than males in their advanced English classes, they should take a survey of male students. Some male students respond that they didn't take as much English as they could have because they feel it is a typically female-dominated field and they are intimidated by being in a room full of smart, motivated women. Would School A be right to offer a male-only English class? I can guarantee that almost no matter who you ask, they will say no. This situation is one of not just segregation, but also reverse sexism.
In middle school, I took an advanced math class that had 13 people in it. 9 of them were Asian. This was a fairly typical demographic for this class. Should my school have offered a white-only Algebra II class, for those who were intimidated by the stereotypically superior math skills of the Asian students? No.
